ASAP has identified specific actions needed to promote Solar and the Solar Grand Plan (SGP). The SGP lays out a scientifically sound path to energy independence for the United States. For background info and rationale for the action categories below, please see the ASAP Priorities.

Everyone can help! While ASAP is working on these items, individuals themselves (either individually or as local groups) can provide a significant boost to these efforts. Where we can, we’ve provided links to assist individuals in getting involved in this effort.

Many of the challenges currently faced by renewable energy are related to government and bureaucratic processes and decision-making. These processes can be influenced by the public. For example: New York Times editorial, 5/28/2012.

Action categories:

• Learn about solar and renewable energy, e.g. join the American Solar Energy Society and receive their informative “Solar Today” magazine.
• Reduce your own traditional energy usage footprint. The Sierra Club Solar Homes effort offers a program that reduces the initial cost of solar panels, and the American Solar Energy Society has a program that encourages, among other things, the use of solar hot water heaters.
• HVDC transmission lines. This is a very complex subject, and ASAP is still working out how activism could help, but here is a useful background document describing the Interstate Transmission System.
• Maintain tax credits for solar and wind.
• Energy storage for support of solar and wind power plants.
• Publicize the Solar Grand Plan (SGP). Make sure everyone knows that the U.S. energy challenges can be solved by solar power, using current technology!
